Southern Utah University

Southern Utah University (SUU), also known as University of the Parks, is situated in Cedar City, Utah. The Dance program is housed within the College of Performing and Visual Arts in the Department of Theatre, Dance, and Arts Administration whose mission is to nurture and challenge the creative process of arts and culture. Further, the SUU Dance mission is to fosters citizen artists engaged in holistic training, research, and creative practice with learning outcomes:

  • To understand dance as a communicative practice that influences communities and impacts global culture.

  • To demonstrate skill in critical analysis, evaluation, and self-directed learning.

  • To effectively utilize physical, oral, and written communication mediums to fulfill collaborative objectives.

  • To demonstrate facility in one or more “somatic” practices, including an understanding of the historical and phenomenological as well as applied aspects of the practice/s.

  • To employ somatic/embodied practices as tools that inform moving, teaching and learning.

  • To apply current scientific knowledge to a dance context.

  • To demonstrate critical awareness of the physical, mental and emotional demands specific to dancers, and to possess strategies for addressing them on personal, communal, and sociocultural levels.

  • To wield creative agency in performance, composition, pedagogy, and community engagement.

The Dance Program offers Bachelors of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in Dance and Dance Education (with and without licensure) as well as a Dance Minor.
